News Worth A Read - Remodeled LEED Rating System
jchait - Home & Garden
In case you missed it, a couple of weeks ago, the U.S. Green Building Council voted on the revised LEED 2009 standard. The new standards will incorporate “More than eight years of feedback from architects, developers and building materials manufacturers.”
I think this puts LEED in a better position now. It’s been tough, with green standards all over the place, and no long term feedback. The new standards will hopefully highlight what architects and designers have learned about green building over the last decade.
According to ENN, “Key changes to LEED include higher baseline requirements for reducing energy use, language that addresses mixed-use projects, and expanded options for using roof materials that reduce the urban heat-island effect.”

Tesla's 100th Roadster Customer Is…
Katie Fehrenbacher - Automotive
Tesla really wants some positive PR. For the past couple of months, the electric vehicle startup has been dogged by news of its layoffs, its formerly dwindling bank account, and its inability to raise a $100-million financing round on the terms it wanted. Tesla’s hard times have raised questions about the company’s overall strategy and resulted in it being included in trend stories about the struggling electric vehicle industry.
So what’s a company to do? Throw a media event and stage a public hand-off of No. 100 of its high-end EV, the Roadster. Tesla says that the 100th person to take the keys is an “interesting customer in his own right,” but isn’t a Hollywood celebrity. Hmm, any guesses? We’re thinking maybe a politician like San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom or California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger? If you have any thoughts or insight, add ‘em in the comment section and we’ll update the post Tuesday at noon Pacific, when Tesla’s event is scheduled to get under way.

jchait - Home & Garden
We’ve been looking lately at setting your holiday table, using green techniques. So far we’ve seen;Set Your Perfect Eco Holiday Table - choosing a table and Linen Choices.
Today, let’s look at some eco-dishes and serving items that go on top of your table…
Clear Glass Wine Decanter and Set of 4 Goblets - lovely recycled glass decanter with 4 recycled goblets.
Oceana Wave Plate - Pearl (set of 4) or Oceana Square Plate - Pewter (set of 4) - great place settings in recycled seaglass. Perfect as a set for formal holiday meals.
Serene Sol Dinnerware (12 pieces) is another place setting option. In recycled glass, but unlike the seaglass set above this one has small bowls available - nice for salads or soups.
Pachamama /Bamboo Large Salad Bowl - beautiful and big serving bowls.
Recycled Glass Live Edge Servers -extra cute little recycled serving dishes for olives, small snacks, or nuts. You could even use these for dips.
Rockstar drink charms - great for when people leave the table to mingle. Perfect for all holiday parties and made from old vinyl records with stainless steel charm hoops. Very cool.
Bird Cheese Markers - I actually hate cheese. However, being that for most folks, cheese is a holiday must, these adorable hand cast lead free pewter bird markers will make cheese identification super fun at your party. Comes with labels as well.
Speed EVs: Battery Beach Burnout '09
khallgeisler - Bikes & Cars
Electric vehicles have a reputation for being the pokey little puppies of the automotive world, and not without reason. The neighborhood electric vehicles that are available today generally go 35 mph for about 30 miles. Hardly fast enough to muss your hair. That’s where events like the 2009 Battery Beach Burnout in Jupiter, Florida, come in.
The EVs, plug-in EVs, and hybrids that meet at Florida Atlantic University February 21 and 22, 2009, will blow past the slow stereotype. Organizers have acceleration testing, autocross, and more on the docket for participants, plus a ride-and-drive event to give the public a chance to try out what may be an unfamiliar powerplant.
The addition of plug-in EVs and hybrids is new this year, as is a separate vendor area near the event field. The Florida Electric Auto Association is hosting the burnout, and will of course include a show-n-shine for EV owners. There’s no reason for the long-standing tradition of spiffing up your car to impress the ladies to die with the combustion engine.
