Northeast Denver LEED Certified Affordable Housing Center Goes Solar
Denver based SolSource, Inc. (www.solsourceinc.com) has installed 18 solar PV systems (ten 1.57 kW and eight 1.47 kW systems) at a new LEED certified, affordable-housing rental project developed by Northeast Denver Housing Center. The Center is a non-profit community development corporation. The two 'Central Park' Apartment buildings are located within the award-winning Stapleton redevelopment project.
"[the development] is designed and built to meet local and national Green Building standards producing units that are energy efficient, sustainably designed & built, and an affordable and healthy environment for the residents. The benefits will be lower energy bills, better indoor air quality and a cleaner environment."
-Getabecha Mekonnen, Executive Director, Northeast Denver Housing Center
The systems will be commissioned on November 2nd during the 25th Anniversary open house celebration hosted by The Northeast Denver Housing Center. Working closely with Xcel Energy, the development allows for a unique arrangement wherein the Northeast Housing Center will pass along the net metering benefits from the solar electric systems to the building's individual residential tenants. The benefit of lower electric bills will accrue directly to the renters, a new approach to both residential PV applications and affordable housing. As noted by Getabecha Mekonnen, the Center's Executive Director, the development "is designed and built to meet local and national Green Building standards producing units that are energy efficient, sustainably designed & built, and an affordable and healthy environment for the residents. 'The benefits will be lower energy bills, better indoor air quality and a cleaner environment."
A combination of public and private sector support, including rebates from the Xcel Solar Rewards program and low income housing tax credit financing made the project and solar electric systems possible.
Each PV system consists of nine SolarWorld Sunmodules (www.solarworld-usa.com) and a 2,000-watt Fronius inverter. SolarWorld Sunmodules are made at North America's largest solar factory in California and their superior energy production was recently confirmed by independent long term testing published by Photon International. The individual system sizes were determined by the available space on each of the building's South facing roof surfaces.
As noted by SolSource, Inc. project manager, Ben McCormick, 'SolSource is very excited about helping to extend the benefits of PV to affordable housing units."
SolarWorld California Sales Director, Raju Yenamandra said, "We are proud to have been chosen as suppliers for this project that brings together, not only the environmental benefits of LEED and solar energy, but also the social benefits of affordable housing."
